When do I get my renewal notice?
A renewal notice is mailed to the physician's address of record 90 days prior to license expiration.
My license has expired and I haven't received my renewal.
A license must still be renewed before the expiration date of the license. The Medical Board can provide a duplicate renewal notice upon request.
Is my signature required to renew my license?
Yes, in addition to completing the sections requesting certification of continuing medical education and training disclosure.
How much is the renewal fee?
Effective January 1, 2007, the license renewal fee is $805.
Are there any reduced fees?
A physician may be exempt from paying a renewal fee if he or she meets one of the following conditions prior to the expiration of their license and notifies the Board accordingly: Military status, Retired status, or Disabled status.
I'm leaving the country. Can I pay my renewal fee ahead of time?
No. The renewal must be paid within the 90 days prior to the expiration of the license.
What is the delinquent fee and when do I have to pay it?
If a license is renewed more than 90 days following the expiration date, a penalty fee equal to 50% of the renewal plus a delinquency fee equal to 10% of the renewal fee will be required in addition to the renewal fee.
I didn't get my license because my address changed. Do I have to pay the delinquent fee?
Yes. A physician is required by law to notify the Medical Board in writing within 30 days of a change of address.
Why do I have to pay?
California law requires that to maintain an active license, each physician, including out-of-state physicians, must pay the full biennial renewal fee at the time of license renewal.
What if I wait more than 30 days to renew my license?
A delinquent fee equal to 10% of the renewal fee will be added if payment is not received within 30 days following the expiration date.
