Inactive License
Any physician who wishes to retain a license while not actively practicing medicine in the State of California may apply for an inactive license. The physician is still required to pay the full renewal fee; however, the licensee is exempt from complying with the Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
A physician who holds an inactive license may not practice medicine in California. The holder of an inactive license need not comply with CME requirements until the license is restored to active status. At that time, the physician must complete the number of continuing medical education units required for a single license renewal period. At this time the completion of 50 hours of Category 1 CME meets this requirement.
